“Hey, remember how I spent a whole year asking Emily if she’d date me but she wouldn’t despite frequently admitting how much she liked me? FUNNY STORY.
We spent the day having a lovely walk in a local park and had just wrapped up watching Forrest Gump. I’m a history major, and I was making a point to tell Emily about how Forrest Gump’s representation of the 60s totally warped how people envisioned the 60s (and, in fact, it’s been suggested that our images and imaginings of the 60s are more reflective of Forrest Gump than of anything that actually went on at the time… but that’s a different essay) …so, here I am, with a Vietnam War book in my face, looking for the pertinent passage to read to Emily.
Suddenly, Emily says “You know what? It’s so silly that people make such a big deal out of engagements and proposals. It’s not that huge of a thing.”
“Uh huh?” I respond, still trying to find the source I was looking for.
“You wanna’ just get married?” she states, matter of factly.
At this point I slowly lower the book to look at her. She’s serious. Or at least she appears serious. “Do… do YOU want to get married?” I asked.
Suddenly the ramifications of the Pandora’s Box she’d just opened washed over Emily’s face, as she scrunched up and began to sputter.
Long story short, I spent thirty minutes trying to calm Emily down as she kept repeated the phrase “It’s weird!!!” whenever I asked her if she’d marry me. Finally, she said yes.
And that’s why technically she proposed first, but I’m the one that finished the deal.”
